Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style.

An expressive wine, it has a stylistic, graceful feel but offers more sapidity, lifting with notes of cherry liqueur, pressed herbs, sweet leather, and intertwining floral components. Over the long term, this is going to become a bit more contemplative in the range and offers a very complete feel at this early stage. The palate has velvety tannins, refreshing, balanced acidity, and an exceptional finish with darker mineral accents.

Barolo Undicicomuni is arguably Arnaldo Rivera’s most important wine. Spiced cedar, leather and scorched earth on the nose. This means that the Barolo Undicicomuni is naturally Arnaldo Rivera’s most complex Barolo. A complex and restrained traditional wine with aromas of licorice, embers, dried red cherries, potpourri, eucalyptus, tar, minerals, quinine and bark. Full-bodied with firm and dusty tannins. It’s a bit angular yet ripe and savory, with long, refreshing acidity and a full-flavored finish.

The normale Barolo from Brezza has lovely scents of red berry, blue flower and a whiff of eucalyptus. Polished and still quite young, the racy palate offers red cherry, strawberry and star anise before a black tea close. From the cru located on the opposite side of the Barolo ridge from Cannubi that has a warmer microclimate and clay and silt soils, the 2021 Sarmassa has intense aromas of dark spice, wild berry, camphor and a whiff of botanical herb. Full-bodied and intense, the palate features ripe Morello cherry, licorice, blood orange and a hint recalling almond liqueur accompanied by tightly-knit, refined tannins. The Barbaresco Tre Stelle is a delight to drink. The character of this vintage is more accessible for sure, and the fruit is very bright and supple. But there's no harm in drinking this warm-vintage release of 7,500 bottles on the early side while all its primary aromas are so intact and enticing. The tannins are soft, and the wine shows medium richness to close.

Since the mid-19th century, the Alessandria family has called Verduno, at the northern edge of the Barolo zone, home. Then, Verduno was the center of Barolo winemaking—here families first crafted dry Nebbiolo wines in the style we know today. The estate, initially known as Fratelli Dabbene, traces its first commercial wine release back to 1830. From 1870 on, after a marriage, it has been called Fratelli Alessandria. Favorita is a rare white grape of Piemonte, produced in tiny quantities. Aged in stainless steel, this is a refreshing and fruit forward wine reminiscent of Vermentino.

Since the mid-19th century, the Alessandria family has called Verduno, at the northern edge of the Barolo zone, home. The Pelaverga grape is cultivated only in Verduno, just down the northern slope of La Morra hill in Barolo. The grape doesn’t have much color or body, but what it lacks in tannin and heft, it makes up for in delightful, distinctive aromatics. At Alessandria, they call it Speziale, the local description for the distinctive pepper and spice of Pelaverga. Theirs leans toward wild strawberry with a dash of plum jam and decidedly herbal notes like rosemary, wild thyme and anise with a dash of freshly cracked black pepper at the end.

If it is true that perfumes give us back the past intact, then this wine is a small time machine. It takes you back, far away, to an environment oriented to mysterious, vaporous shadows; the delicate outlines anticipate the supple oscillations of flavor; the indigo and purple reflections instill the thought of a new sip.

The Albe bottling takes its name from the sunrises visible from the high-elevation vineyards used for this blend, with fruit sourced from several sites across Barolo to capture balance and complexity even in warmer years. Crushed flowers, mint, spice, crushed rocks, rose petals and a kiss of blood orange all run through this translucent, wonderfully expressive Langhe Nebbiolo. This is a Barbaresco in all but name. Terroir and high altitude of the vineyards give the wine spicy notes as well as outstanding complexity.

Brachetto is a wonderfully floral red variety that's typically made into an enthralling, sweet & fizzy dessert wine. Here, Sottimano has made a dry version that is medium-light-bodied and highly drinkable in its balance, while maintaining the intensely floral and soft red-fruited character of the variety. This bursts with crushed rose petals, mint, white pepper, star anise and orange peel in a compelling chill-friendly package.

The Basarin whispers a promising mix of rose, cedar and sweet herbs. Taut and tight, the palate is currently focused on structure rather than flesh. It's relatively dense but not rich, and leaves a lasting saline impression. I suspect further ageing will turn up the volume and calibrate its intrinsic components.

There is a new Nebbiolo warrior in the Langhe. Born in 1993, Stefano Porro took over his family winery in 2019 with a goal to make outstanding terroir-driven wine from his tiny cantina in Serralunga. Stefano follows sustainable viticulture, and his ethos is to let the wine express its terroir in full. The essence of Barolo – its power, its structure, its nuance, its cherry fruit, its aromas – is found more in Serralunga than anywhere else. Showcasing elegant and fine aromas of fresh plum, cherry and spice notes, this wine is dense and structured with great freshness on the palate and well-balanced tannins. Cherry notes are certainly prominent, but here in Serralunga is where herbaceous flavors come to the forefront. This bottling shows the perfect balance of color, perfume and taste.

For the 2022 vintage, Trediberri only made one Barolo using all of their available vineyard parcels Including all of the estate's Rocche dell'Annunziata fruit. This wine's aromatics open beautifully, offering notes of framboise, pressed flowers, and juicy mandarin orange. Medium-bodied, it resonates on the palate with refreshing acidity, bright fruit, and elegant fresh earth, finishing long and harmonious. A stunning wine with tremendous balance.

A newer name in the context of the historic La Morra section of Barolo, Trediberri has a passionate trio behind it, dedicated to crafting profound examples of the legendary terroir. Trediberri's is unquestionably one of the best available. Primarily from their vineyards in La Morra and Roero, this Nebbiolo is also sourced from alongside their Dolcetto vines in Vicoforte. Brilliant ruby-red color, this unoaked, fruity and drinkable nebbiolo is meant to be an easy (yet not trivial) wine to share with friends during a nice and funny chat. Drink it slightly cold, maybe while sharing a platter of mixed charcuterie or with some lovely tajarin al ragù.

The bouquet reveals notes of jasmine, rose petals, white raspberries, pink salt and high mountain flowers. The palate features the signature freshness of Nebbiolo, with an initial lush, salty texture and balanced acidity, an aerial balance.

100% Nebbiolo. This is Valfaccenda's "picnic wine," meant for drinking immediately. It comes from all the young vineyards at the estate, plus some fruit from some cooler pockets in the oldest vineyard holdings. As a result this is a light, chillable, extremely drinkable expression of Nebbiolo with perfumed red berry aromas and extremely soft tannin.

Fruit for this wine comes from a three-hectare parcel in Serralunga d'Alba near the village, with south and southwestern exposures in a small amphitheater. The soils in this area are older and thus more evolved, but they always create wines of strong character. The Vietti 2021 Barolo Lazzarito is easy to identify thanks to its salty mineral finish, which is almost metallic in taste, and its bright hints of sweet rosemary and wild herb. These delicate high notes form pretty framing to a dark core of elegant fruit. The estate counts five vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba, but Lazzarito is the only MGA bottling.

Vajra's NV Extra Brut Rosé N.S. Della Neve is incredibly characterful, sizzling out of the glass with leather, mesquite smoke, blackberry and white pepper. A blend of 50% Nebbiolo and 50% Pinot Noir, the structure of the former comes through loud and clear through bright acids and firm, powdery tannins. Sour berry fruit and mentholated herbs meet with salty stoniness in the mouth, elevated by a lively, fine mousse.

The desire to produce great wines in the renowned Langhe region led the Gussalli Beretta family to acquire, in 2013, a five-hectare property planted with Nebbiolo in the municipality of Monforte d’Alba in the Barolo DOCG area. Their project, the Fortemasso winery, is carried forward by a young, motivated team and guided by a clear production philosophy: expressing the contemporary soul of Barolo with wines that are elegant, flavorful and surprisingly fresh. Floral notes of rose and hints of cherry on the nose; harmonious palate with a savory finish. A fresh and versatile Barolo, perfectly interpreting Fortemasso’s conception of the Monforte zone.

An expressive wine, it has a stylistic, graceful feel but offers more sapidity, lifting with notes of cherry liqueur, pressed herbs, sweet leather, and intertwining floral components. Over the long term, this is going to become a bit more contemplative in the range and offers a very complete feel at this early stage. The palate has velvety tannins, refreshing, balanced acidity, and an exceptional finish with darker mineral accents.

Fruit for the Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo del Comune di Verduno comes from five vineyard sites in Verduno: Riva Rocca, Rocche dell'Olmo, Campasso, Pisapola and Boscato. This was the first Barolo del Comune di Verduno to hit the market (with the 2017 vintage). The bouquet focuses on redcurrant and tart cherry, and there is a pinch of cinnamon buried in there as well. This is a pretty Barolo that manages elegance and an easy-drinking style.
