Jérôme Billard is a young grower who has taken over the reins of the family business in recent years. In a fine vintage for the chenin grape, this dry wine from the Loire offers poise and precision, with delicate aromas of white fruits and flowers, and a pure, long finish. Domaine de la Noblaie produces white, rosé and red Chinon wines, as well as a sparkling Touraine wine. Indeed, La Noblaie is renowned for its Chenin plots which offer fine and elegant white Chinon wines such as the Chante le Vent cuvée. The other star of the wine estate remains Cabernet Franc, the emblematic grape variety of the Loire Valley, which expresses itself on notes of violet, acidic red fruits and spices. Mostly known for its eponymously named cheese, Valencay is also home to wines of the same name. Here, on soils comprised of flint/silex soil, the red wines are blends that are made with Pinot Noir, Cot (the local name for Malbec), and Gamay with some producers opting to use a small amount of Cabernet Franc. The flinty soils of Valençay give the wines a finesse which is evident in the texture here. While you get the elegance of Pinot Noir, plus juicy red fruits from the Gamay, the dominant note is its leaner, more structured Côt (Malbec) side, with those green, herbal, spicy notes that remind us of a light Chinon.

Marc Brédif Chinon is one of the great bargains in the world of Loire Valley reds these days. The wine is made from vineyards planted on gravelly soils and raised solely in stainless steel tanks. While Saumur may be just a mere 30 minutes drive from Chinon, geologically speaking at least, they couldn’t be much more different. Saumur is known for a soft, chalky limestone that makes up the bulk of the bedrock here and which imparts a chiseled minerality to wines. Like Chinon, this is 100% Cabernet Franc. Here however, this wine offers a layered bouquet of wild bramble, tangy red currant, and cracked white pepper, underscored by subtle herbal spice. On the palate, it is silky and generous, revealing notes of fresh black raspberry, dried plum, and a whisper of forest floor. The tannins are finely knit, lending structure without weight, and the finish is persistent, tapering off with hints of savoury spice and mineral tension.

If Chinon’s grandest wines come from the upper slopes, where tuffeau limestone yields Cabernet Franc with deep flavors, a firm structure, and a remarkable capacity for aging, the appellation’s most charming bottlings come from the flatter river banks covered in alluvial sand and gravels. The Baudrys source their cuvée Les Granges from such loose, well-draining soils, whose tendency to warm up quickly in sunny weather favors ripening and avoids any of the austere, vegetal notes for which Cabernet is infamous. What Les Granges lacks in tannic structure, it makes up for in irresistible fruit and heady floral aromas. This is Loire Cabernet in its purest form, low in alcohol but high in perfume, which the Baudrys harness through low-intervention techniques like aging only in concrete and bottling unfiltered with barely any sulfur. That suave, silky texture is a delight when it swishes over the palate, especially when matched to a simple meal from fresh ingredients.

This Sancerre is crafted from 30 to 60-year-old vines, from a steep southeast-facing vineyard. Vinified in cuve and aged exclusively in 3-4-year-old 300-litre barrels, it has magnificent aging potential and will be great from now to 2030 and beyond. This wine vintage is characterised by both opulence and freshness, with a medium yellow hue and a reductive, smoky nose with notes of passion fruit, yogurt, grapefruit, pine and hay. Its full-bodied, waxy texture is complemented by juicy citrus acidity, while grassy bitters and a slatey minerality round out the finish. Complex, elegant and finessed, this is a great single-vineyard Sancerre.

Saint-Satur is famous for its ancient Abbey and its Silex (flint) terroir on the hillsides bordering the Loire river. Silex is a coveted soil type, found in only 15% of the vineyards in Sancerre, that produces wines with amazing minerality, acidity and precision with trademark smoky notes.

Very aromatic with pleasant flower and fruit fragrances recalling the flower of the vine and the fruit of the Sauvignon. On the palate it reveals a freshness and vivacity characteristical of grapes harvested at good maturity.

Bursting with zesty citrus and floral notes with just a hint of seabreeze salinity, this is a wine you're going to want again and again before you even taste it. Gerard Boulay is certainly one of the greatest producers in Sancerre. His Sancerre "domaine" comes from average 35 year-old vines on kimmeridgian limestone soils on the hills surrounding the village of Chavignol. 2025 is a superb vintage in Sancerre bringing beautiful ripeness with lovely freshness and elegant fruit to the wine, finishing with the chalky minerality always present in the Boulay Sancerres. Farming is with organic methods, fermentation is with indigenous yeasts.

If loving Arnaud Lambert’s wines is wrong, I don’t want to be right. Arnaud Lambert is a star of the Saumur region in France’s Loire Valley where he makes expressive Chenin Blancs and Cabernet Francs. Cremant is the word here for sparkling wine made in the same method as Champagne. The Lambert Cremant is produced from 75% Chenin Blanc & 25% Chardonnay on the estate’s chalkiest soils and from certified organically farmed vines. It ages for 2 years on the lees, giving it a note of fresh baked bread along with the green apple, peach and lemon flavors.

Arnaud Lambert, like many of the wine world’s luminaries-in-the-making, has adopted the philosophical approach to allow the terroir to define the wines, rather than the other way around. He’s most known for his wines grown on Brézé.

First made as a single parcel in 2010, La Côte comes from the majestic La Grande Côte vineyard (sometimes referred to as La Côte d’Amigny), a south/southeast-facing hillside on the outskirts of Chavignol. La Côte has quickly become one of the heavyweights of Boulay’s range. This is the domaine’s coolest terroir and the last to be picked. The site’s pure Kimmeridgian limestone soils and the late picking date deliver density and alluring precision on the palate. The palate is super filigreed and focused, driven by forceful acidity and lovely purity, stretching to a super long, candied grapefruit, salt-licked finish.

The nose is floral and fruity: white flowers, citrus fruits, and the characteristic mineral tension of great Sancerre. On the palate, it is lively and refreshing — precise, energetic, and beautifully focused, with a clean, mineral-driven finish that speaks clearly of its terroir.
