John Lockwood has slowly but surely been redefining what California wine is about. His "Stained Glass" Grenache is so aptly named that it almost feels predestined. Valle de Inez is 100% Pinot Noir from vineyards in and around San Luis Obispo that showcase the cool climate and distinct soil types of the region. This expressive wine offers layers of Bing cherry, dried cranberry, and allspice, leading to a supple palate of cranberry, bay leaf, and integrated tannins that carry into a soft, refined finish.

Precise and popping with bright energy, 2021 Love you Bunches Rose immediately wins you over in everything you want out of a scrumptious rose. Strawberry married with cool, firm peach. The Bassi Vineyard is located 1.2 mies from Avila Beach, just west of the Topotero Vineyard, tucked up in the hillsides of Avila Valley, facing due south. The vineyard was planted in 2001 to 29 acres on an 112 acre ranch. The soils are composed of sandstone, ranging from rock outcropping to sand deposits, a reminder of the close proximity to the sea. In the glass, this Blanc de Blancs shows a pale golden color and lively fine bubbles. First, the nose reveals bright citrus zest with hints of sea salt and levain dough. These notes reflect the coastal soils and slow bottle aging. On the palate, Meyer lemon and key lime flavors are balanced with a creamy texture and mineral backbone. Moreover, the finish is clean, refined, and long, with subtle oyster shell and saline hints that evoke the ocean breeze.

Situated five miles from the Pacific on the edge of Edna Valley, Le Fenil is shaped by winds flowing through the Los Osos-Morro Bay. Planted entirely to own-rooted Champagne clones of Pinot Noir, the early-arriving afternoon fog and steady ocean winds moderate heat accumulation, preserving the natural acidity essential for precision sparkling wine. Brilliant pale straw in color with a fine mousse. Lifted aromatics of stone fruit, citrus blossom, and tangelo zest. Topotero Vineyard is a family-owned, 5-acre site in Avila Beach, planted in 2000. Situated just 1.3 miles from the Pacific, where the maritime climate has a profound influence on the vines. Their ranch is alive with gardens, orchards, pigs, guinea fowl, and the watchful eyes of hawks and owls. Foggy mornings and sunny afternoons preserved freshness and acidity while achieving full fruit maturity. Pale pink with a fine mousse. Aromas of wild strawberry, white nectarine, and citrus peel lead to crystalline flavors of finger lime, watermelon, and sea spray. Stolo Vineyards is located less than 3 miles from the ocean, just south of Big Sur and west of the Santa Lucia mountain range in Cambria, California. Lucas and Nicole have helped to plant and farm this vineyard since 2010. The powerful cooling influence of the Pacific Ocean through fog and wind make this an extremely cool climate grape growing region. The nose exhibits an orchard fruit core with subtle tropical hints, pleasantly complicated by almond paste and pastry cream nuances. The Lieu Dit Sauvignon Blanc beckons you in with a rich, tropical nose, then kicks down the door with a wash of lively, zippy acids that dance across the palate and tickle the tongue. Scar of the Sea focuses on working with farmers who are instrumental in farming for the future and making wines with as little intervention as possible. Their wines are made with the intention to tell a story of where they come from, the people who farm them, and reflect each vintage under the California sun. El Sendero Luminoso, which translates to “The Shining Path,” is named after an iconic rock climb in El Potrero Chico, Mexico that winemakers Natalie Siddique and Ryan Pace have a special fondness for. The Gularte Vineyard, located at the northern end of the Salinas Valley on River Road, just outside the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation takes advantage of Monterey County's mild climate which brings foggy mornings and windy afternoons. Bright and red-fruitred, this savory Pinot Noir shows incredible freshness and vivacity.

Not a rose, but also not quite a red, the 2025 Stirm Wine Co. 'Natrolite' Chillable Red is an organic, low-intervention table wine from the Cienega Valley that blends the light red structure of Cabernet Pfeffer and Pinot Noir with the aromatic freshness of Riesling. Juicy and exuberant, this wine is all about bright fruit, high acidity, low tannin, and serious drinkability.

Another of Smith’s terroir-driven cuvées, the grapes sourced from 52% Thomasen’s Split Rail and 48% Lester, the 2024 Syrah Sandstone Terrace is all black fruit and black pepper, with high acidity. Run, don't walk! If you think that pink wine with the word "Zinfandel" on the label is something to be avoided, well then we've got news for you. Turley (just about the most iconic producer of Zinfandel in America) finally released some of their rose of Zinfandel and we've got some! Normally available in only a tiny handful of places outside of their tasting room, we're thrilled to have finally gotten our hands on some. Grab a bottle, maybe grab two, because this is a stunner of a bottle that you're going to want more of. This is a crisp, dry rosé with excellent length and character, owing to organically and dry-farmed old vines planted in the 1950s. Absolutely gorgeous and luminously colored, with rose petal, peach pit and spiced wild strawberry. Elegant and polished on the palate with a pleasurable finish. There’s a reason Zinfandel is the most successful rosé grape in the world!

Gemina is the name of an ancient Roman grape planted in the region around the Massican hills of southern Italy. This grape variety originates from Greece, dating back to the first century when it was first called Aminea Gemina. Today, we know this grape variety as Greco. Gemina is a unique white wine blend combining grapes originally from the south of Italy and now planted in California. The Massican Gemina is a blend of Falanghina, Greco and Fiano. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the Gemina is laced with citrus peel, marzipan, white flowers and slate. I especially admire the wine's freshness and verve. Bright saline notes extend the effortless finish. This opens beautifully on the back end.

This Sauvignon Blanc opens with great aromatic complexity as the scents of key lime, verbena, and honeysuckle mingle on the nose. The taste is defined by fresh citrus flavors and bright acidity, as well as mineral and herbaceous undertones that are characteristic of the Fumé Blanc style. The finish is juicy, mouth-watering and long-lasting, enticing you to enjoy sip after sip.

The NV18 leads with perfumed aromatics — fresh berries, flowers, Douglas fir, and subtle herb — a hallmark of the mountain-grown Cabernet Franc component. The palate is round and supple, with valley floor Merlot providing a silky-fruity mid-palate. Firm structure underlies the richness, with complexity derived from the multi-vintage blend and the contrasting characters of 2017 (elegance, perfume) and 2018 (depth, fullness). The finish is savory and persistent. Since 1998, blending two vintages has been central to the project: harvested, vinified, and blended for freshness, lightness, complexity, and balance.

Scarecrow's 2023 M. Étain is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% each Malbec and Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, drawn from the same 25-acre Rutherford vineyard as its big brother. The small proportions of blending varieties give it a more floral nose than the straight-Cabernet Scarecrow, with those elements joining bay leaves and ripe cherries on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is medium- to full-bodied, creamy and supple up front, then more tannic and velvety-textured on the lingering, dark chocolate-tinged finish.

A second label of the much pricier Gemstone wines, this is made from fruit sourced from vineyards in Yountville and Oak Knoll, by legendary Napa winemaker Julien Fayard. A brilliant ruby hue opens to crushed blackcurrants, ripe black cherry jam, fresh cappuccino, dark cocoa, and cigar leaf. The palate is lush and impeccably balanced, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a seamless integration of fruit and spice. A long, elegant finish lingers with hints of dark chocolate and toasted oak.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic Mount Veeder wine loaded with strong savory and mineral accents. Black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and tobacco notes dominate this Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a beautiful, full-bodied and incredibly satisfying Cabernet that does everything right. Black fruit, graphite menthol and licorice notes on the finish lend complexity to this huge, explosive Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2019 Monte Bello is a wild, exotic wine. Huge, soaring aromatics meld into a core of heady, exotically ripe fruit. Not a shy wine by any means, the 2019 is atypically opulent, and yet all of the classic Monte Bello structure is there, underneath all of that fruit. The 2019 needs time in bottle to shed its baby fat, but there is a lot to look forward to. I imagine it will always be a pretty exuberant wine. Inky red fruit, blood orange, espresso, sweet American oak, cedar and pipe tobacco leave a lasting impression. In a word: magnificent!

The 2023 Chardonnay Cuvée Alyce emerges from the highest-elevation section of the vineyard and is planted with an assortment of clones, including Hyde Wente, Hudson Wente and Clone 95. Lush and textured in the glass, the Alyce offers lovely textural resonance within the context of the year. It's full-bodied, with a weightless, silky texture and elegant notes of hazelnut coaxing through the palate. Orange confit, crème brûlée, spice and a kiss of French oak linger as the 2023 blossoms with air.

Always an aromatic treat, the 2023 Russian River Chardonnay entices with fresh baked apples, golden pears, a dash of warm spices, and a generous squeeze of crisp lemon. The medium bodied palate is layered with orchard fruits, crushed ginger, citrus zest, and a hint of brioche. The tangy acidity is crisp and bright, while the slight creaminess from lees aging rounds out the edges into a satisfying, persistent finish.

Olivet Lane Vineyard was planted in 1975 and sits on 65 acres of sloping benchland in the Santa Rosa Plain, in between the warmer Westside Road region and the cooler Green Valley, where warm summer days are moderated by cool breezes and chilly evening temperatures. The combination of low temperatures, regular fog intrusion, and well-drained loam, clay soils create an excellent environment for growing Chardonnay that develop cool-climate characteristics and impeccable acid at low sugars. The nose of this aromatically intense Chardonnay displays aromas of tangerine, nectarine, white cherry, flowers and flint, while the palate brings waves of vibrant citrus acidity, juicy stone fruit and pithy lemon peel, leading to a mouthwatering finish with tons of floral character.

The Hartford Court Chardonnay really overdelivers. It’s an ideal expression of the Russian River Valley, with all the bright, sunny orchard fruit and spritzy citrus lift you could hope for, but also an extra measure of freshness and juiciness that leaves the mouth watering. Notably restrained, this shows excellent finesse and complexity.

It’s a bright ruby color and boasts a seductive perfume with notes of fresh leather, ripe cherries, sweet spices, and forest earth.
