August Wines of the Month

Twelve Summer Wines

CHEESE & WINE PAIRINGS OF THE MONTH

“Le Pico” La Fromagerie Germain, Le Montsaugeonnais, France

Le Pico is a beautiful expression of French goat’s milk cheese. Its slightly downy rind hides a center that evolves as it matures. When young, it has a chalky yet tender core. Each bite gently breaks into soft, flavorful morsels that coat the palate with a delicate creaminess.

  • Presqu'ile Winery, Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara, California - The beautiful aromatics and medium body of this wine perfectly complements the bright decadence of Pico.
  • Fuso, “Gamé” Gamay Saint-Romain, Cotes du Forez, France - A balanced and rich Beaujolais is exactly what this subtle yet rich cheese needs.

“Finger Lakes Gold” Lively Run Dairy, Interlaken, New York

Finger Lakes Gold, a firm, nutty cheese with a touch of sweetness. Expert cheesemakers coax out a lovely butteriness from the goat’s milk, while a touch of tang remains at the finish. Beautifully balanced and perfect for enjoying outside during the dog days of Summer.

  • Kurtatsch, Pinot Grigio, Alto-Adige, Italy - Bright, high acid wines are perfect with this bright, slightly tangy aged goat cheese.
  • Cloudline, Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon - The fruit notes mixed with a hint of cracked pepper make this complex wine perfect for a complex cheese like Finer Lakes Gold.

“Smorbier” Highlawn Farm, Lee, Massachusetts

A playful take on the French classic “Morbier,” Smorbier is a creation from Highlawn farm that uses their intensely rich Jersey cow’s milk and fresh hot peppers from a nearby farm to create this perfect, melty, summery cheese.

  • Salvatore Marino “Turi” Bianco, Terre Siciliane, Italy  - A bold, spicy cheese needs a full bodied wine grown in volcanic soils like this gorgeous Sicilian white.
  • Panoramico, Rioja Tinto, Rioja Alta, Spain - The dark fruit and intense peppery notes on this wine are a match made in heaven for Smorbier.

Gorgonzola Dolce, CasArrigoni, Lombardy, Italy

The creamiest blue cheese out of Italy that exists. Decadent, rich, and with enough of a kick to please blue cheese connoisseurs and with enough creaminess to convince the skeptics. A life (and palette) changing experience, this cheese is the perfect way to end an outdoor summer meal.

  • Tenuta Montecchiesi, “Miraly” Toscana Rosato, Tuscany, Italy - The acidity, minerality, and fruit notes are absolutely perfect to be enjoyed with Gorgonzola Dolce.
  • Kermit Lynch, Cotes du Rhone Rouge, Rhone, France - You’re going to want richness in body and flavor in the wine that you pair with Gorgonzola Dolce, and this Cotes du Rhone hits all the right notes.
