Claus Preisinger, a certified biodynamic winemaker on the shores of Lake Neusiedlersee, is behind this red blend from Burgenland. This wine is 60% Zweigelt, 20% St. Laurent, 20% Pinot Noir from various sites across predominately gravel soils. Puszta, which translates to “plains” in Hungarian, refers to when the source vineyard sites were once part of Hungary and Libre, of course, is Spanish for “free”. Half carbonically fermented, half directly pressed, and finished off in huge casks. Otherwise, Claus lets the grapes speak for themselves. The result? John Lockwood has slowly but surely been redefining what California wine is about. His "Stained Glass" Grenache is so aptly named that it almost feels predestined. Made from 100% Grenache grown organically in several vineyard sites around the winery, this wine is all about red-fruited drinking satisfaction. Brambly/red fruits like raspberry and strawberry mix with kirsch, rose petal, black pepper, blood orange, iron, and dusty open road with a lipsmacking intensity and a fancy but refreshing finish that just begs to be served with a bit of a chill.

From the expansion of grape varieties featured in this vintage to the flavors and textures up for exploration in the glass. The 2022 is mostly Valdiguié and Carignan with Zinfandel, Grenache Noir and Barbera – several new varieties to the Love Rosé blend. The grapes remained on the skins and stems for up to 24 hours. All varieties, excluding the Grenache, were gently pressed into stainless steel tank to naturally ferment. The Grenache underwent carbonic maceration before it was pressed, fermented and aged in concrete tank. Sulphur was not added during fermentation and aging. Once fermented to dry, the wine aged on the lees for four months. All were blended at bottling with a small amount of sulphur addition. Fresh-picked strawberries & savory herbs on the nose. Watermelon aqua fresca, dried thyme, strawberry smash & sea salt on the palate.

Bouchaine is the oldest continuously operating winery in Carneros, a region located on the southern tip of Napa Valley.In the late 1880s, a Missouri-born settler named Boon Fly planted grapes and fruit trees on the property. An Italian winemaker named Johnny Garetto bought the land in 1927 and farmed it until 1961, when he sold to Beringer. Pedro Parra is a genius. No really, this man is remarkable in the wine world. He’s a geologist with a PhD in Agronomy who consults with some of the most prestigious producers in Burgundy (Roulot comes to Pedro when they need advice about vineyard management) when he’s not consulting with winemakers in the United States and Chile as well. Oh yeah, he also makes some of the most expressive wines I’ve tasted in ages. His Imaginador is basically Cinsault,although there are the occasional vines of Carignan, Muscat, Semillon, and Pais randomly growing in the heritage vineyards sites he works with and scant amounts of those make their way into this wine. The nose is powerful with cherry notes and just a hint of barnyardy goodness. On the palate this is focused with loads of dark fruits and pronounced mineral structure. Burgundy drinkers would do well to take a bottle of this home.

As impressive and singular as the red wines from Pedro Parra are, the 2024 Resolution was the wine I found the most multifaceted and striking. It impressively captures a contemporary expression of Chardonnay produced with a global perspective while also perfectly representing its origins in Cobquecura, Itata. With its history dating back to 1143, the estate was originally known as Tertre d'Arsac because it was a large hill in Arsac. There has been many owners spanning the thousand year history of the estate but one of the more notable is Pierre Mitchell. He was a glass blower and in the 1700, some of Chateau Du Tertre was estate bottled thanks to his ability to make glass bottles. This is hundreds of years before other wineries started estate bottling. There was another long string of owners without anything important to note. In 1961 Philippe Gasqueton purchased the estate. He was the owner of Chateau Calon Segur in St. Estephe. He replanted the estate and modernized the wine making facilities. Situated on the other side of the highway, beside the village of Chambolle. Francois believes you still get the typicity of Chambolle. Key part of why is that it is at the end of the ‘fan’ of the Combe that divides Chambolle, benefiting from the breeze + lots of alluvial rocks deposited in the vineyard from the alluvial wash. This gives the vineyard a rockier soil than many Bourgogne sites and excellent drainage. Vineyard planted in 1973, 49 years old. A slightly riper yet still wonderfully fresh nose blends notes of red and dark currant, orange peel and a whiff of earth. There is excellent verve and precision to the delicious middleweight flavors that offers just a bit more size and weight before concluding in a balanced, bright and inviting finale. This is a quality Bourgogne that is slightly more structured.

Based in Couchey, this tiny lieu-dit was once a muddy, marshy place. ‘Potet’ can be used for something humid and silty. These are Marsannay’s typically sandy marl soils. Paler ruby in color. Rose petal and violet aromas – a pretty, crystalline nose. The palate is delicate on the entry, finding a supple pliancy on the mid-palate. Crisp acidity lends definition. This works very well.

Under Philippe Faury's guidance, the winery has expanded to its current 17ha of vineyards, nearly all so steep that they must be terraced. Both Philippe and his son Lionel carry out backbreaking work to ensure the vineyards are perfectly cared for. The Faurys eschew new oak in large quantity, and fermentation is carried out only by foot pigeage. Black fruits, olives, and violets leap from the glass with this wine. On the palate this is filled with dark, rich blue and blackberry fruit with elements of black olive, dried herbs, and tapenade.
